Ted DeCagna was recently commissioned by Strawder Family Innovations, a Cranford, NJ company, to create the package design and numerous promotional materials for The Ridge Pro, a very clever roofing safety product designed to prevent falls from residential rooftops.

This product, designed and patented by Strawder Family Innovations, is a well-built, heavy-duty steel clamp that rolls up a roof slope and securely hooks over virtually any roof ridge. The safety clamp is then connected to a safety harness that every roofer, solar panel installer, firefighter, insurance adjuster, chimney sweep, or satellite TV installer should wear while working on a roof.

The product has already received several outstanding customer reviews, including one from a Florida company whose insurance adjuster was inspecting severe storm damage on a steep roof. Over time, roofing nails can rust and lose their holding power. When this happens, the weight of a worker can cause shingles to slide out from underneath them, making a roof as slippery and dangerous as an ice rink. This insurance adjuster would have fallen from a three-story roof and likely suffered fatal or life-changing injuries had it not been for The Ridge Pro.

“I took the design of this package very seriously because nothing is more rewarding for a package designer in New Jersey than designing a package that helps sell a truly innovative, potentially life-saving product like this,” said Ted DeCagna. “We’ve all seen roofers take incredible risks by working on steep-sloped roofs without anything securing them if they fall. For just a few hundred dollars, they can have the peace of mind that comes with a product designed to help prevent death, paralysis, or devastating back and neck injuries.”

A package designer’s responsibility is to create a package design that jumps off the store shelf while clearly communicating how the product works through outstanding photography, easy-to-understand demonstration images, dynamic color, and contemporary textures. The goal is to create packaging that immediately captures attention while educating potential buyers.

“Hearing that the product saved a life—or at least prevented a very serious injury—is an incredibly rewarding feeling,” Ted said. “If my package design influenced the customer’s purchasing decision, then I know I’ve truly done my job well.”

The Ridge Pro has become standard safety equipment for major companies such as Terminix to help protect the safety of their employees. Ted also produced demonstration videos for both Ridge Pro and Terminix to train employees on the proper installation and use of the product. When used correctly, The Ridge Pro is OSHA compliant and provides an important layer of fall protection for workers.

Ted’s objective was to develop a package design that would stand out on retail shelves with a contemporary logo, bright colors, a striking product photograph, demonstration images showing the product in use, and a clearly organized list of key product benefits. The approved package design shown above successfully achieved those goals and is helping position The Ridge Pro as one of the industry’s most exciting new safety inventions.

The product has become so successful that the company has been invited to appear on the popular television show Shark Tank, an opportunity that could take the product to an even larger national audience.

Ted especially enjoys designing packaging for products that offer such significant safety benefits to hundreds of thousands of potential users.

“There’s nothing more satisfying than working on a project that genuinely improves the health and safety of others. I’m proud to contribute my experience and design skills to a company that has developed such an innovative product for preventing dangerous falls.”
